Helpful Apps and Programs

Getting around on trains: Google Maps

I recommend google maps app over apple maps because the support for train travel is clearer. A lot of Japanese people rely on this, which says a lot. For driving I recommend Apples Maps.

Translating pages on your computer: Google Translate Extension (Chrome)

I recommend getting Google Chrome and downloading this extension because it is very helpful for Japanese only websites. Also consider the Rikaikun extension for word-by-word translation. Good for studies.

Converting Units app: Units Plus Converter

Most recommended app for converting U.S. Imperial system to Metric system. Very helpful for cooking.

Messenger app: Line

Most popular messenger app in Japan, everyone has one and prefers to message via Line instead of regular texts.

Finding Hobby/Sports groups: Meetup app

Perhaps one of several applications, but helpful starting place for getting into a weekly sports playing/watching groups or hobby groups. Sports groups are very structured in Japan because of the need to rent most sport facilities, so you usually can’t find a random field of people playing and jump in.

Resona Bank in English: Resona Bank app (JP Appstore only)

The Resona website is not offered in English but the app is. However, you can only get it from the JP Appstore. Please see these instructions for switching to the JP Appstore in order to do this.

Websites for International Food: iHerb.com & Amazon.co.jp

Both have very limited selection but between these two websites and international grocery stores, hopefully you can get what you need.

Kanji Memorization: Wani-kani

Wani-kani is a website program using mnemonics to help learn kanji through stories and spaced repetition. It is a helpful supplement to textbooks and can be used as a primary means of kanji learning if not in language school. There are also a few apps like Tsukurume that work with Wani-Kani You do not have to pay if you want to use the website only as a dictionary.
